ST. CECILIA'S JUNIOR CHOIR
"Make a joyful noise unto the Lord"
St. Cecilia's Junior Choir is the Youth Choir of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gosport. Our mission is to build in the young children and youth of our parish community a strong foundation in music and service. The choir is an opportunity for young children to be active participants in the joyous celebration of the Mass by leading the congregation in worshiping the Lord through song. Through this service the Mass becomes a more natural, meaningful part of their lives.
To build a strong foundation in music and service in young children and youth members of the parish community.
To enable young children use their God-given musical talents in the service of God and the parish.
To enable the young ones play an active part in the work of evangelisation and spreading the Good News, most especially through singing at Holy Mass.
While it is our utmost desire have a perfectly well-tuned “performing” choir, we place more emphasis on forming a strong bond among the children and youth members of our parish community. So choir rehearsals will also include moments of spiritual formation and recreation.
MEMBERSHIP of the Choir is open to any boy or girl between the ages of 8 and 16 who wants to participate in the music ministry. The child should have a desire to participate and a willing attitude. The child should also be able to handle the music rehearsals and sit through Mass. Children come into the choir with various levels of ability. Some have experience and sound great, others are new to it and need time to figure out what it’s all about and what to do with it – and that’s fine. We will try to help new children adapt to the choir at their own, individual pace and not put pressure on them to do anything for which they are not ready.
Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians and Church music because as she was dying she sang to God. St. Cecilia was an only child. Her feast day is celebrated in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches on November 22.
