Pentecost Sunday, Year B,
23 May 2021
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your mind whatever I have said to you.” Jn. 12:26.
The Holy Spirit continues to sanctify every soul every minute of the day. St. Francis de Sales tells us that He does this through innumerable inspirations which are all “the attractions, motions, rebukes, and interior compunctions, lights and intuitions which God works in us.” St. Francis de Sales, Introduction to a Devout Life, III, 18 The Holy Spirit does this by means of many, many graces in the form of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit and related virtues which effect the action of grace in soul. As the Holy Spirit enlightened the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday, so we pray that He will enlighten us to overcome all the evils in our world. . As Our Lady was united with the Apostles in their prayers on Pentecost, so we call on Our Lady of Knock to strengthen the Irish Nation and all the nations of the world to see the terrible consequences of permitting abortion in our world.
Our Lady of Knock
Mary’s miraculous appearance at Knock in Ireland in 1879 was a great consolation to those who suffered through the terrible famines and extreme hardships of that era in Ireland’s history. Although Our Lady of Knock was silent, the peace and healing she brought was real and lasting. On the 21st August, 1879, at about 8 o’clock, Our Lady, St. Joseph, and St. John the Evangelist appeared in a blaze of Heavenly light. The vision also included Christ as the Lamb of God standing on an altar surmounted by a cross—a symbol of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Holy Eucharist. St. John was standing with a gesture of teaching while holding a book, presumably the Book of the Revelation he authored, in which he described his vision of the heavenly liturgy (Holy Mass). Our Lady is reminding us of the importance of Holy Eucharist and Holy Mass in the prayer of the Church.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Fear of the Lord, Fortitude, Piety and Counsel.
We need to pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten our world with His Seven Gifts to enlighten and strengthen them to overcome the culture of death which wants to legalize abortion. We pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Fear of the Lord, which is the first and fundamental lesson of the Holy Spirit Who infuses into the soul a hatred of sin and a loving fear of offending God. Let us pray that all nations will see the horror of abortion in the eyes of God and reject it. Needless to say, if anyone does accept abortion, they commit a mortal sin. The gift of Fortitude strengthens the soul so that it may always be courageous in serving God and never separating himself/herself from Him. We are weak and need this gift to be strong in following God. We pray that the Irish people “will hunger and thirst for justice” (Mt. 5:6) and vote for the life of the baby in womb. The gift Piety enables the soul to have ardent desires to please God in all things and devote himself/herself wholeheartedly to the service of God. If we wish to respond to the inspirations of the gift of piety, we must make every effort to be kind and gentle, and to form the habit of seeing in everyone a child of God and our brother. The essence of the gift of piety concerns our relationship to God, our Father, as His sons and daughters. When we understand our divine filiation, we will render to all of God’s children in the womb the gift of life. The gift of Counsel helps us to discern what the Holy Spirit wants us to do in our spiritual life. St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that “every good piece of advice regarding men’s salvation comes from the Holy Spirit.” (Commentary on the Lord’s Prayer). We pray for all nations that they will obey the inspirations of the Holy Spirit to reject abortion.
The Gifts of Knowledge, Understanding and Wisdom
By the gift of Knowledge, the Holy Spirit helps us to see the nothingness of this world and of creatures. “For what does it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, but suffer the loss of his own soul.” Mt. 16:26 Let us pray that all the nations will regain their souls and choose life over the false pleasures this world. By the gift of Understanding, we come to a deeper knowledge of the mysteries of our faith. “Blessed are the clean of heart for they shall see God.” Mt. 5:8 We pray that all people will see the beauty of the child in the womb and protect it from those who wish to kill it. “Create a clean heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (Ps. 50:12) Through gift of Wisdom we experience God through love.“Taste and see that the Lord is sweet.” Ps. 33:9 Let us pray that all nations will see how much God loves every child not only to give them life in this world but also eternal life in heaven.
Pray to End Abortion
In 1971 Archbishop McQuade of Dublin told the Irish people that if they allowed contraception in Ireland that a curse would fall on Ireland. The Irish nation did not listen to Arch. McQuade and for the last forty years a curse had fallen on Ireland with a great loss of faith in the Irish people. A similar curse form God has fallen our world for the billions of babies who have been aborted. Let us pray that all nations will abolish the evil plans of the devil and the culture of death for allowing the grave sin of abortion to be allowed in the many nations of our world.
